Who put those bullshit labels on you? Don't believe that shit. Just because white folks put a label on something, doesn't make it true. Don't accept those bullshit labels.

This poem is about the tough conversation of colorism in America. Within this piece, I share my personal experiences with the various shades of skin I came into contact with from a very young age all the way up to manhood, and how that changed my perception of my reality...both inside and out.
People are so quick to believe that children don't pick up on these sort of things because our consciousness is still growing, but we really do see the cultural bias towards lighter skin tones at a young age...and that plants a seed of self hatred in young Sunkissed Americans everywhere in this country...as well as other places in the world. Colorism is debilitating to the psychology of Sunkissed children, and on some level, that weakens us as a collective. It weakens the planet. Revealing the systemic racism in America is not about pointing the finger and finding people to blame for the ugly reality we live in...it's about taking responsibility in all the different areas of life so that we can come together and make a better place for future generations. It starts with something as simple as properly labeling a crayon to better help Sunkissed children feel secure in their beauty...to firing public servants who operate with obvious prejudice. Let's make change on all levels. As above, so below. If you know, you know.
My ultimate stance on this subject is that American culture, which includes its education system, indoctrinates and perpetuates systemic racism from the TOP...DOWN... and it needs reform. As far as I am concerned, any Sunkissed child raised in this country is a victim of colorism.

Let me start by saying I absolutely love this poem and it was also a fan favorite for many.
This poem was layered with multiple themes such as control, oppression, belief, perspective, pupose, free will...and many more...but at it's core, I tried to talk about the struggle to be one's self. The freedom to be. I believe this unspoken plight is something that, as conscious beings, we all struggle with deep down inside. Even when we're winning this fight, it's still a never-ending struggle to be yourself versus what the world wants you to be...and so, on some level...we're all puppets. The strings, or the things that control us aren't necessarily things we're born with, but things we create with those around us. Our parents give us our first strings, usually. And then they sometimes teach us that God holds all the strings. And society gives us different strings in the form of societal norms that we conform to. And we just watch one another...we watch as all these strings are made...and we watch them control us. And why is this important?
Because in a world where everyone is a puppet, there is nothing more powerful than a puppet without strings...but it's hard to cut or even see my strings when I'm so focused on yours and how they move you...especially when that movement enetertains me. We become so distracted by what's in front of us and ignore what's inside, that we lose sight of what it means to be truly free. The truth is...I don't think we're meant to be puppets. To be controlled by anything. I think we're supposed to be Gods. I think we shape our own futures. So, why is the world full of puppets?

This poem is self explanatory in the way that it simply deals with the theme of temptation.
However, this experience with temptation was a peculiar case of me thinking I had conquered the idea of temptation only to see myself struggle when faced with it for the first time in reality...and that's a very human thing to have to deal with.
It happened during a year full of firsts. First apartment...first time living with someone I was in a relationship with...first time having sex...which is the catalyst for the subject at hand. Before the relationship, I had to taught myself that sexual relations were not the core of a relationship, but I somehow found myself partners with someone who did think so. Which was extremely confusing because we were practicing Christianity at the time and I just thought there were more important things to focus on than the physical aspect of a relationship. I mean, we were supposed to be building towards marriage and I thought the way to do that was through conversation or a multitude of experiences, but instead, we argued over how much we should be laying down with one another. Living with this push and pull of sexual tension was like a temptation black hole. Oddly enough, she was actually asking for sex while I was writing this poem.
Fast forward, I now know that I was right to fight for what I believe in. I almost feel as if...if I had not fought for such things, I'd not only be married to the wrong person but we'd probably have a child by now.
I know we're getting a little personal here, but sometimes that's necessary. Lol

This poem revolves around the expression of life tempo. I try my hardest to express the pace in which I have progressed through life, which for the most part has been "slow and steady". Usually, such cautious movement is wise, but personal experience has shown me that it can be just as harmful as recklessness if used excessively. I think there's a balance to be had. There are times when you should think things through and times when you should act decisively. I've always spent too much time thinking.
I also went into some very personal themes to illustrate my reason for such a cautious lifestyle. Most notably, my lack of a solid father figure, which is unfortunately all too common for young African-American men. Growing up, sometimes you question why you're here... and with no one to give you answers or show you the way, you have to figure it out yourself and you end up doing one of two things... Either you brave the unknown and fall where you fall, or you take the most unconfident steps possible and hesitate to do much of anything at all. I was the latter for much of my life. A late-bloomer in so many ways.
But, no matter how cautious I was, I knew that life was still happening...and so a fear grew inside of me over time. A fear that one day I would wake up and it would be too late to do all that I wished to do. My destination has always been so important to me that I've been too afraid to take steps towards getting there. Afraid I'll be led astray somehow, without guidance. Sometimes, I still struggle with this out of habit, but trust the process.
