Lagos love

I’m a village girl
Waitin for a rich man
Who can give me soft life…
I want luxury
I want shiny gowns
Long hair wigs
Would I ever get that?
To get a rich man
Who marries me
And live happily ever after….

Forget character
I want money
I wanna be a baddie
I wanna be a sidechick
Yet

This isn’t Lagos love
Social media is another fantasy….
You heard someone says not all glitters are gold….
If you lived in that lifestyle,
Would you forget where you came from?

I can say is
If you come home
And you dress wealthy
You perform your care
You act like you’re better than the poor
And this kind of reminds me of
You went out into a new world
Came back home as a colonizer
As a foreign….
Like you’re no longer yourself anymore….
It’s like who are you?
How come you stop speakin your mother tongue?
You spoke broken English like a white man….
Cos now you’re ashamed of your people….
Invitation to the table has gotten through your head….

It’s not Lagos love….
I heard it’s a big city….
More modernized….
Honestly
I wonder
Does the pattern happened?
Cos respectfully
In these conditions
Africans are actin like Europeans….
I know it’s rude
It’s uncalled for….
But hear me out
Let me explain myself simpler as much as I can…
Colonization abused Africa….
Invaders abused the minds of melaninated nations….
This is why we observe trauma that has been passed down
Ever since Buckra stepped their filthy foot on your land….
That’s somethin to think about….
I don’t wanna sound like I disrespected my people
From Africa,
I’m speakin the truth….
And I love y’all….

Lagos love,
I hear stories
Real
And
Unreal
Based on experiences….
Lagos reminds me of New York City….
In my opinion
Both places have somethin in common
To fall in love
To get a career
Tall buildings
Fancy cars
If all of this can make you forget
Where you came from
Or the fact you are ashamed
Of your family,
Cos you made it
Your standard is upgraded
Next thing you might become
A downfall
Just cos of your success
Your pride got bigger
And it’s sad….

I never been to Lagos before
I used to live in New York….
All this luxury all this money
May not crack up to be….
Cos really, invitin to a white man’s table
And money could really bring you happiness….
Unless you truly are delusional….
