Some know, but don’t care to admit this. The electoral college was an appeasement to southern states by the framers to elect a U.S. president. Because voting rights were non existent, even though the south was more densely populated (because of the enslaved population), Blacks were not allowed to vote. Blacks were not considered full humans, but only 3/5ths human. So, the compromise to this pretense was to determine by number, pre-established representation by state to elect the President.
