In 1923, Hitler was convicted of high treason for his role in the failed Beer Hall Putsch, an attempted coup in Munich. He was sentenced to five years in prison but served only about nine months in Landsberg Prison. During his imprisonment, he wrote the first volume of Mein Kampf. Despite his conviction, Hitlers rise to power was facilitated by political maneuvering, economic instability, and the weaknesses of the Weimar Republic, which allowed him to legally assume the position of Chancellor
