it Is Worth It...
Here we go again....
Chinese researchers have recently identified a new bat-derived coronavirus, designated HKU5-CoV-2, which has the potential to infect humans. This virus utilizes the same ACE2 receptor protein as SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, to enter human cells. However, studies indicate that HKU5-CoV-2 binds less effectively to the human ACE2 receptor compared to SARS-CoV-2, suggesting a lower efficiency in human cell infection. Laboratory experiments have demonstrated the virus's capability to infect human cells with high ACE2 expression, as well as human intestinal and airway models. Researchers have also identified monoclonal antibodies and antiviral drugs that may target this bat virus. While the discovery underscores the importance of continuous monitoring of coronaviruses in animal populations, experts advise that the risk of HKU5-CoV-2 causing a human outbreak is currently low.
