A military coup is reportedly underway in Ivory Coast, with gunfire heard in Abidjan and President Alassane Ouattara's whereabouts unknown amid claims he has been kidnapped. Just earlier this month, Ouattara welcomed U.S. General Michael Langley to Ivory Coast to help strategize the country’s security—a visit now ironically followed by chaos. Internet access has been cut, and panic is spreading across the country. An Ivorian refugee in Ghana described the president's rule as oppressive, accusing him of treating the nation like personal property and ignoring citizens' suffering. He said businesses are unsafe under Ouattara’s leadership and that political instability forced him to flee for safety.
