In late October 2025, a truck carrying 21 rhesus monkeys for research crashed on I-59 in Jasper County, Mississippi, leading to several escapes, prompting a large search with armed officers and warnings to the public due to initial (later debunked) concerns about dangerous diseases. Most monkeys were recovered or euthanized, but a few remained at large, with the last missing monkey captured alive in early November, ending the intensive search for these Tulane-affiliated research primates.
