In November 1979, shortly after the Iran Hostage Crisis began, Ayatollah Khomeini ordered the release of 13 hostages—specifically women and African American men—citing them as individuals oppressed by the U.S. government. The remaining 52 hostages, viewed as spies, were held for 444 days.
