Sean Grayson, the former Illinois sheriff’s deputy convicted of second-degree murder for killing Sonya Massey inside her own home, has died while serving his 20-year sentence, according to his attorney.

Massey was an unarmed 36-year-old mother who called 911 for help—not knowing the responding deputy would become the very danger she feared.

Grayson had Stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to other organs. Just weeks ago, the Illinois Prisoner Review Board unanimously denied his request for medical release. He had served less than a year of his sentence.
