Chicago’s city council is moving ahead with an ordinance to honorarily rename the stretch of North Wabash Avenue outside Trump Tower “Barack Hussein Obama Way.”

Alderman Brendan Reilly introduced the measure, which would apply the designation to the east side of Wabash between East Kinzie Street and East Wacker Drive, with a sign going up directly outside the building at 401 N. Wabash.

The proposal followed a Change .org petition that gathered more than 30,000 signatures in the two months before the ordinance was introduced. It landed the same week Obama opened his long-awaited presidential center on Chicago’s South Side.

Chicago normally reserves honorary street signs for people who have d*ed, but Reilly built an exception into his proposal for a former president.

“The spirit of this is really to recognize Obama,” Reilly told Block Cl*b Chicago.

He has also been candid that the move carries a second purpose. Reilly previously led the successful push to strip Trump’s name from an honorary designation on the same block, and has said that since the tower itself cannot be touched, the street is the next best target.

Mayor Brandon Johnson signaled support when asked about it, telling reporters there was “no debate to the exceptional leadership of President Obama.”

Honorary designations do not change a building’s official address, only the signage. Trump Tower would remain Trump Tower on paper even if the ordinance passes.

The measure still needs full City Council approval before any sign goes up.
