Mali π²π± has indefinitely suspended the issuance of visas to French π«π· nationals at its embassy in Paris, its foreign ministry has disclosed.
In a statement, it noted that the move was reciprocal after it βlearnt with surpriseβ that France π«π· had classified Mali π²π± to be in a βred zoneβ due to supposed "strong regional tensions".
France π«π· earlier this week suspended the issuance of visas and closed the visa centre at its embassy in Maliβs π²π± capital, Bamako.
The regional tensions reportedly come from Niger π³πͺ where the military overthrew the democratically elected government of President Mohamed Bazoum about two weeks ago.
The junta-led Mali π²π±, Burkina Faso π§π« and Guinea π¬π³ governments have declared their support for the Niger π³πͺ coup and cautioned against any military intervention there.
Relations between Mali π²π± and France π«π· have been strained since Malian troops seized power in 2020 and 2021 military coups.
