Hollywood often gets it wrong when casting actors in historical roles. Did you know that the legendary #blackcowboy, Britt Johnson (1840-1871), who searched the Texas frontier for his wife and two daughters held by Kiowa Indians, was played by #johnwayne in the 1956 movie The Searchers? Jim Beckwourth (1798-1866), the famous fur trapper, guide, explorer, and Indian fighter, was played in 1951 by the white actor #vanheflin in the western Tomahawk. In addition, it is also untrue that Blacks were called cowboys out of disrespect. The word “cowboy” is derived from the word “vaquero,” which is Spanish for an individual who managed cattle while mounted on horseback. The vaquero culture goes as far back as the 1680s.
