21-year-old South African artist Tyla has made it very clear that she doesn't identify as Black. Instead, she prefers to identify as colored because of her mixed race. Tyla's hit song “Water” peaked at 18 on Billboard charts.

Now don't shoot the messenger. I don't agree with any of this crap they're Black as far as I'm concerned, but here's some of the history if memory serves. Feel free to correct me... The colonizers did a job on them and many South Africans have been on that kind of time. Their culture is not our culture. Colored does not mean to them what it means to us. For them is is like a get of jail free card. Think of it like the caste system which is where I believe that it was derived. Gandhi was a racist too. He didn't want to identifiy with the Kaffirs (ni**ers) so he set himself up against them to avoid European persecution. In the Indian caste system the "untouchable" (undesirables) are at the bottom, and are the darker people. The crazy part is that the word Kaffir I believe is Arabic and has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with being a non-believer. Years later it came to be a racist term, and it's absolute worst it was used during apartheid. Many South Africans we're persecuted for being mixed race. It was illegal so fast forward to now it's almost like a status symbol if you survived and have white lineage. So to them it's almost like a badge of Honor to have survived persecution and now have some sort of status.
