It’s been 30 years since the genocide in Rwanda that killed over 1,000,000+ people.

On the 11th of January 1994, General Romeo Dallaire made a chilling discovery when one of Interahamwe militiamen Turatsinze Jean Pierre told him that Habyarimana's government were planning outright massacres. He told him :

- that there were many trained militias waiting for a signal to start the bloodshed.

- that they are too many to the level they will be killing 1000 people/hour.

- that in Kigali, hutu extremists have weapons hidden in different warehouses/caches.

He contacted his bosses in New York at U.N. HQ, warning that his informant has been ordered to register all Tutsi in Kigali. He suspects it is for their extermination and made it clear that he was planning to raid all weapons caches in next 36 hours.

"We cannot agree to the operation contemplated as it clearly goes beyond the mandate." Kofi Annan, then head of the U.N. Department of Peacekeeping Operations replied in refusal

Dallaire tried to change Annan's mind, repeatedly exchanging faxes with U.N. for several days in vain. Instead, his force was reduced by 90%. Two weeks later, the massacre had started. Hutu extremists went on to kill over one million_ people .

Dallaire says he and his troops moved through entire villages of dead, sometimes clearing paths through corpses with their bare hands.

"With my own hands I carried them," he said. "We carried them in our arms, we carried kids in our arms, and adults. We were picking up the bodies and moving them aside. There would be piles of bodies. We could have actually saved hundreds of thousands but no one was interested." Dallaire told CNN's Christiane Amanpour.

Rwanda you have been on your own, and there is no doubt that you may once again be on your own in the future. Africa needsto unite and stop with the tribal grievances.
