In response to community concerns, New York City has implemented a curfew at four migrant shelters, including one on 110th Street in Manhattan. The curfew, running from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., is designed to address disturbances and ensure the safety of both migrants and residents.
The shelters affected by the curfew house nearly 2,000 single adults and are located in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and two in Queens. The curfew was introduced following complaints from residents about migrants venturing into communities asking for food and money, and incidents of violence.
Mayor Eric Adams stated that the curfew is part of the city’s learning process in managing the ongoing migrant crisis. He also indicated that the city is considering extending the curfew to other shelters and respite centers.
Violations of the curfew could lead to expulsion from the shelters. Anyone found violating the curfew three times within 30 days will be subject to this penalty.
The curfew has sparked controversy, with some residents expressing skepticism about its enforcement and effectiveness. Some migrants, particularly those working night shifts, are concerned about the impact on their ability to earn money.
The curfew is seen as the first step in a series of measures needed to address the city’s migrant crisis. While it has been welcomed by some, others believe it should have been implemented from the start.
