Sudan’s civil war has now displaced over 10 million people internally in just over a year, according to the latest UN figures. An additional two million have been forced to flee the country.

The siege of El Fasher by the UAE-backed paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against the Sudanese military is intensifying displacement through fierce fighting.

Doctors Without Borders reports that the RSF stormed the town’s main hospital, which the NGO operates, forcing it out of service. The organization called the attack “outrageous” and noted that it is “not an isolated incident.”

The RSF currently controls the capital, Khartoum, and most of western Sudan. It is now advancing towards the geographic center of the country.

El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, is the last city in the region that is still held by the Sudanese army. In May, Human Rights Watch warned that RSF violence against the non-Arab population in Darfur may constitute genocide.
