A new investigation by Lighthouse Reports, with support from media outlets like @lemonde_en and Washington Post, found that the EU has been aware that its funding of North African countries for “migration management” has been used to dump people in the desert or face other abuses.
The EU has given Morocco, Tunisia and Mauritania over $770 million for border management since 2015.
Desperate people seeking safety and security have faced racism, violent raids, abuses in detention and expulsion by those countries – in many instances paid for by EU funds and with EU knowledge, according to the new report.
