Haiti is facing a pivotal moment as international forces step in to address the ongoing surge in gang violence. The United Nations mission, led by Kenyan forces involves 2500 police and soldiers from multiple countries, including Kenya, the Bahamas, Bangladesh, and Jamaica. These operations within Haiti are being kept top secret, aiming to regain control over the capital, Port-au-Prince, where gangs control about 80% of the area.

Gang violence in Haiti has escalated dramatically, with an estimated 150 gangs operating across the country, severely impacting daily life and economic activities. Businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities have been disrupted, contributing to widespread instability.

Haiti has not held elections in years, and currently, there are no politicians with a legitimate mandate. The goal of this international intervention is to stabilize the country and pave the way for elections, allowing Haiti to have a legitimate government. However, the path forward is fraught with challenges, as gang leaders demand a seat at the table in the government, a condition that the transitional government finds difficult to meet.

Reflecting on Kenya’s involvement, reminiscent of their domestic struggles with policing and protests, raises questions about the suitability of their tactics in Haiti. Human rights concerns loom large, given past incidents where Kenyan police actions sparked controversy.

Despite assurances of training and vetting, the international community watches closely, emphasizing accountability for any rights violations.

Historically, Haiti has experienced significant political instability, especially over the past decade, with events such as the 2010 earthquake and the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 exacerbating the crisis. Previous international efforts have had mixed results, highlighting the complexity of the situation.
