Russians sending Africans to war for visa renewal? 👀

Russia is coercing African migrants and students residing in Russia to join the military and fight in the war against Ukraine in exchange for visa renewals or to avoid deportation. The key points are:

- European officials have assessed that the Russian government is threatening not to renew the visas of African students and young workers in Russia unless they agree to join the military and fight in Ukraine.
- Some Africans on work visas in Russia have allegedly been detained and forced to choose between deportation or fighting in the war. There are reports of some being able to bribe officials to avoid military service.
- This practice of sending migrants and students into battle under duress dates back to earlier in the war, with one European official stating they suffer high casualty rates as they are deployed in risky offensive operations.
- Russia has embarked on a global recruitment drive to enlist foreign mercenaries from at least 21 countries, including several African nations, offering lucrative signing bonuses and salaries.
- Recruiters have targeted migrants and students previously seeking employment in Russia, luring some with promises of work before forcing them to train and deploy to the front lines in Ukraine.
- There are an estimated 35,000-37,000 African students currently in Russia who could potentially face such coercive tactics for visa renewals or risk deportation if they refuse to join the military.

The reports suggest Russia is exploiting the vulnerable status of African migrants and students in the country to forcibly bolster its military ranks for the Ukraine invasion through threats of visa non-renewal and deportation.
