I'm speculating, but my opinion is that was a test and she failed. He suspected that she didn't feel a connection, and was just going for the ride. Using him for her own purposes. In today's society many times we need help to meet our basic needs. It takes time to develop the discipline, and have the means to be secure. Most of us are just in survival mode, in fear of deeper connections, vulnerability, and don't want to grow with someone. It's easier to put up walls. I mean, why else would he keep a spreadsheet detailing his investment, unless he was about building?
