Chicago
1919
Red summer
Like real life hell
On American soil
Where there is too much
Blood drownin our bodies away…
It’s more than a bloodbath
White folks have made an ocean of
Our pain…our heartache
But wait, we don’t feel bad feelings
Remember
We’re not human to their eyes
Cos
Red summer
Brought anger to our bones
Cos white folks throw stones
Our young brotha Eugene
They drowned him just cos we were
On their side…. Yet we were not supposed
To have emotions, right?
They hit Eugene….
This was 1919,
So why did they hit him and
Then drowned him?
Why spark a brawl in the whole town?
And we fought back
Y’all brought national guards out
Just to protect the whites…
But
They hit a child…they drowned a child
And they got away…
and nobody taught this history in school…
Cos we have to coddle
The white students’ fragility and guilt..
Which is bogus to me….
