Now I'm really interested in knowing what that phone call was about...

The US Navy wants you to disregard you getting PTSD, missing limbs, killing innocent men, women, children and babies, destabilizing a country, totally annihilating homes, villages, towns, cities and countries oh, and the best part, coming back home in a body bag after fighting a people that your country deemed the enemy because they don't live according to American standards...

Mansa Musa, also known as Musa I of Mali, was the ruler of the Mali Empire in West Africa from c. 1312 to c. 1337. He is often cited as one of the wealthiest individuals ever in history; his reign is marked by his extraordinary wealth, his significant contributions to the spread of Islam in West Africa, and his famous pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324.

Mansa Musa's wealth is difficult to accurately quantify in modern terms, but it was primarily derived from the vast natural resources of his empire, which included significant gold and salt mines. The Mali Empire was one of the world's largest producers of gold during his reign. His wealth was so immense that it is said to have significantly impacted the economies of regions he passed through on his way to Mecca, due to the amount of gold he spent or distributed.

One of the most famous accounts of Mansa Musa's wealth comes from his pilgrimage to Mecca, which he undertook in 1324. The caravan included thousands of soldiers, attendants, and subjects, dozens of camels each carrying hundreds of pounds of pure gold, which he freely distributed along his journey. This act of generosity and devotion significantly increased his fame across the Islamic world and beyond.

Mansa Musa's wealth and generosity had a profound impact on the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern economies. It is reported that the gold he spent during his pilgrimage caused a significant devaluation in the price of gold in the regions he passed, affecting the economy for years to come.

Beyond his display of wealth, Mansa Musa is also known for his significant contributions to the architectural and educational landscape of Mali. He commissioned the construction of major Islamic educational centres, mosques, and universities, notably in Timbuktu and Gao. Under his rule, Timbuktu became a centre of education, attracting scholars and students from across the Islamic world.
