Smh...2020: Aspiring rapper gets 99 years in prison for paying friend to kill mother; gunman gets 100 years.

Qaw’mane Wilson plotted to have his mother killed and ended up spending his inheritance on cars and trying to set up a music career.

Yolanda Holmes doted on her son, Qaw’mane Wilson, an only child she lavished with fancy clothes, jewelry and a Mustang.

At 23, the aspiring rapper who called himself “Young QC” wanted more, and hired a hitman to kill his mother, Cook County Judge Stanley Sacks said, as he sentenced Wilson to 99 years in prison.

The gunman, Eugene Spencer, was sentenced to 100 years.

“The word is ‘matricide,’ meaning murder of one’s own mother,” Sacks said as he stared down from the bench at Wilson and Spencer.

“Whatever he wanted, his mother gave to him. A car. A job. One could say he was spoiled. She gave Qaw’mane life, and it was his choice to take it way from her.”

Spencer rode with Wilson’s girlfriend to Holmes’ apartment in Uptown in 2012, and shot Holmes as she slept in her bed, then struggled with Holmes boyfriend, knocking him unconscious, then returning to stab Holmes after a phone conversation with Wilson, who told him to “make sure the bitch is dead.”

Wilson later collected the money in his mother’s bank accounts, and in the months after her death used the cash to customize the Mustang she had given him with gull-wing doors.

On one occasion, he withdrew thousands of dollars from a bank and tossed wads of cash to a crowd of people he said were fans of his rap music — capturing the moments in a YouTube video that was played for the jury.

His long dreadlocks pulled back into a top knot. Wilson, now 30, slouched in his chair and merely nodded when Sacks announced the sentence. When asked if he had anything to say before Sacks made his ruling, Wilson was brief.

“I just want to say, nobody loved my mother more than me,” he said. “She was all I had. That’s it.”

About Time : Shoplifter shot and killed while running from police
November 26, 2023.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – On Saturday afternoon, a suspect who was trying to evade arrest outside a Kohl’s store on Ellison Road NW was fatally shot by an Albuquerque Police Department (APD) officer, according to APD spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos.

As part of a strategic retail crime mitigation effort, APD officers had been monitoring the area and noticed a man and a woman emerging from the store, allegedly with stolen goods. Although the woman was arrested without issue, the man attempted to elude officers, initiating a chase across the parking lot of the shopping complex.

The scenario took a fatal turn when the man reportedly brandished a weapon during the pursuit, leading one or more APD officers to open fire. Deputy Chief Mike Smathers of the APD highlighted that officers did attempt to make contact with the suspect and negotiate surrender, but these efforts were unsuccessful. The inquiry is ongoing regarding whether or not the man fired at the officers. Smathers clarified that during the gunfire, one officer fired a live round and a 40-millimeter less lethal round was also used.

The identity of the male suspect, believed to be in his mid-30s, has not been confirmed, but Deputy Chief Smathers referred to an extensive criminal record. He suggested the incident should serve as a reminder that retail theft operations pose serious risks to law enforcement officers and the public.

Smather’s comments were echoes by Gallegos, who also refrained from identifying either suspect. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.

An undercover human trafficking sting in Coweta County led to the arrest of 26 people, including a local man who has been identified as a top children’s education official with the Pentagon.

According to the military publication Stars and Stripes, 64-year-old Stephen Hovanic of Sharpsburg is the chief of staff for Defense Department schools in the United States.

The Department of Defense Education Activity administrator arrested recently for allegedly soliciting a prostitute during a human trafficking sting in Georgia has been freed on bond and is on leave from the agency.

Stephen Hovanic, 64, of Sharpsburg, Ga., was among 26 people arrested during a two-day operation by the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, according to a social media post Tuesday by neighboring Haralson County Sheriff’s Office, which provided support for the operation.

The chief of staff for Defense Department schools in the United States was released from custody Nov. 16 on a $2,675 bond, according to a release report provided by Coweta County.

Hovanic is on leave from the agency, DODEA spokesman Will Griffin wrote in an emailed statement Wednesday. He did not specify the type of leave or whether it is paid or unpaid.

“We are aware of an alleged incident involving a DoDEA employee in the Americas Region,” Griffin wrote. “As there are ongoing legal processes, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
