On Sunday 15 Sept. 1963, 4 members of the KKK placed 15 sticks of dynamite at the entrance of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL (the church had been a meeting place for civil rights activists, but was holding regular Sunday service on that day). 4 girls ages 11 - 14 were killed, and 22 were injured. One week before the bombing, Alabama Governor George Wallace had told a reporter that all Alabama needed to stop integration was a “few first-class funerals.” Within days the FBI identified the 4 men responsible, but charges against them were not brought until 1977 (J. Edgar Hoover blocked any prosecution in 1965). One member was convicted in Nov. 1977. The other perpetrators were not convicted until 2001 and 2002.
