Due to the recent fires, Maui residents are worrying a rebuilt, Lahaina could slip into the hands of wealthy outsiders.
Oprah's recent purchase, revealed in sales deeds, means she now owns around 1,000 acres of land on Maui.
520-acre plot for $3.89 million (2023)
330 acres for $2.47 million (2023)
Two 10-acre swaths of land for $100,000 each (2022)
The controversy of millionaires buying up land in Hawaii was also highlighted in December 2021 when Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla, bought 110 acres of a former sugar plantation on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
The land added to the couple's 1,300 acre $ 100 million luxury estate, which has made them the target of critics, slamming them for trying to 'colonize' the island.
Zuckerberg was also accused by some of trying to force the tenant farmers from their historic plots, and in 2017 he apologized in the local newspaper, explaining that he was abandoning his quiet title actions and would 'work together with the community on a new approach'.

Have you ever feel like your disability is in the way, sometimes?
Have you ever feel like your disability is in the way, sometimes?
Hear me out, ok?
You wanna go to the restroom but you can’t go cos
You need an assistant…you feel like you wanna go on
Your own….even go to the store and you wanna reach
A can of sweet potatoes on the top shelves but you have to ask for help…
Even when you drop a pencil on the floor though you can’t pick it up….
Yes there are challenges that we face a lot….there’s nothin wrong to ask for
Assistance…nothin wrong to ask for help….
It doesn’t mean you can’t do anythin
You can do anything, but it’s not everythin
Cos there are still limitations everywhere in the world….
For many of us people with disabilities have creative ways to be independent
Some work, some don’t….
I don’t like askin people for a helpin hand when they’re in the middle
Of doin somethin…even when I have to….
And it’s annoyin for others as well….
It’s like I wish I could take myself to the ladies’ room….
It’d be easier…
I can’t….it’s why you have family and friends who you trust
And you got your aides, your staffs to help us along the way
We should be grateful, and appreciate for the people who loves you
I have family who takes care of me and I’m thankful for that…
Yes I felt like my disability is in the way sometimes, cos there are limitations.
It doesn’t mean I can’t do anythin…
It means that I’m aware of what I can and what I can’t do….
Do you understand?
We have obstacles, we go through processes…
It’s a journey…
Please don’t think of disability as a negative way….
It doesn’t define us….we’re born with it, or it came from the accidents….
Who we are as a people is our definition…
