Ok so… I have no idea what just happened. My boyfriend’s roommate wanted to talk about anti-fascist concepts & I obliged. I let him know that I don’t ascribe to organized religion, & that he’ll have to respect Black & other marginalized voices when he joins the conversation. He agreed because he’s supposedly proud to be an old hippie. Next thing you know, he asks me if I have a circular burn mark. He claims he has a problem with Santeria because they supposedly brand children. I ran a search & found NOTHING, so I asked for documentation from an academic source. Next thing I know, my bf calls:
Chuck: “what are you doing to piss Big John off?”
I replied, “What does HE feel pissed off about?”
Chuck: “What are you trying to do here?”
Me: “am I on speakerphone?”
Chuck: “No, I’m in the other room.”
Me: “well, I’d like for him to —“
Chuck “what do you think you—“
Me: “I didn’t cut you off. Now do you want to hear my side, or—“
Chuck: *click*
Why is he defending this old white man over me? Why does he assume I’m wrong instead of simply asking?
I asked for proof because this old guy has an entire website dedicated to connecting real-life childhood trauma cases (all the victims online were Black) to African-origin religions (Vodun & Santeria in particular). He then goes on to brag about how much he works with various police forces to combat these religions, not child abuse (and his name is not in any of the articles as any sort of “hero”). This is the SAME PROPAGANDA THAT KEEPS MAMA ASSATA IN EXILE AND US UNABLE TO VISIT CUBA. None of those cases mentioned anything about rituals. NONE. I have compassion for victims of child abuse, but NOT ONE of these is connected to any religion. Am I tripping, or is my man helping an op?
