The Turtle...
The First American Submarine: The “Turtle” Built in 1775, during the American Revolutionary War. Designed by David Bushnell, a Yale student. It was the first military submarine ever used in combat.
But Who Built It?
The submarine was physically constructed by an **enslaved Black man named [Ezra “Ned” Bushnell], who was David Bushnell’s brother's slave. His real name might have been lost to history, but he’s often referred to simply as "Ned." Ned was a skilled mechanic and carpenter, and he played a crucial role in building the Turtle, even though he didn’t receive formal credit at the time. Without Ned’s labor and craftsmanship, the Turtle would likely never have been completed.
Why Is This Significant?
It's a rare example of how enslaved African Americans contributed to early American innovation, even in military technology. This contribution is largely missing from most traditional historical accounts.
