Someone told me
I can’t draw black people
Cos I will be around white people
And white people will take care of
Me at camp….there will be black people
Around…i don’t understand why
I have to draw white people, especially
When I don’t want to…unless I draw
Real life people….

Is someone protectin me?
Guardin my feelings and situations that
Could give me trauma?
Avoidin anythin like that?
Cos I don’t really care about their feelings….

I’m drawin people who look like me
In front of them….whether they like it or
Not….i’m not there to be careful with
Their fragility….i’m there at camp to
Have lots of fun, and if it’s leisure time,
I will draw Disney characters black
I will draw non Disney characters black
In my sketchbook….

I understand you’re protected me
But please, I draw black people in front of
White people before….if some don’t like it,
Oh well…I don’t care…it’s my art, my way….

They’re goin have to respect that…
I have white friends, they know I draw
Black people….when this happened,
It kind of reminds me of slavery situation….

Where a black child had to play a white doll
When a massa was there….are there any slaves
Who were talented artists that had to white folks
For the sake of their slaveowners?

And I don’t wanna come off like that, but someone didn’t mean
Any harm…I feel offended by it, and I didn’t say a thing
Cos I don’t wanna ruin their day….

I responded ok, though i will not listen…
Unless someone asks me to draw a real life white person
I can do that,
But to draw make believe people who doesn’t look like me…
No way….
