In November 1979, shortly after the Iran Hostage Crisis began, Ayatollah Khomeini ordered the release of 13 hostagesโ€”specifically women and African American menโ€”citing them as individuals oppressed by the U.S. government. The remaining 52 hostages, viewed as spies, were held for 444 days.
