In November 1979, shortly after the Iran Hostage Crisis began, Ayatollah Khomeini ordered the release of 13 hostagesâspecifically women and African American menâciting them as individuals oppressed by the U.S. government. The remaining 52 hostages, viewed as spies, were held for 444 days.
