As we close out Black History Month in the U.S., we remember and honor the work of Peruvian choreographer, activist, and composer, Victoria Santa Cruz. Her 1978 poem “Me Gritaron ¡Negra!” serves as a powerful tribute to affirming her Black identity in the face of racism.
Santa Cruz was famously known for producing works that centered the neglected & forgotten Black experience in Peru.
Despite her passing in 2014, Santa Cruz’s impact and legacy will continue to live on.
