Did you know that a shocking 457 cars were stolen in Chicago last week alone? That's a staggering 65 cars disappearing every single day! This alarming trend is hitting our black communities the hardest, bringing with it increased fears for safety and soaring car insurance costs. But what's even more concerning is the lack of action from Mayor Brandon Johnson to tackle this crisis head on. Our neighborhoods deserve better, and it's time for real solutions.
Sadie and Maud
by Gwendolyn Brooks
Maud went to college.
Sadie stayed home.
Sadie scraped life
With a fine toothed comb.
She didn't leave a tangle in
Her comb found every strand.
Sadie was one of the livingest chicks
In all the land.
Sadie bore two babies
Under her maiden name.
Maud and Ma and Papa
Nearly died of shame.
When Sadie said her last so-long
Her girls struck out from home.
(Sadie left as heritage
Her fine-toothed comb.
)
Maud, who went to college,
Is a thin brown mouse.
She is living all alone
In this old house.
In 2010, Australian teenager Sam Ballard was drinking with his friends when they saw a slug crawl across the floor.
Sam’s friends dared him to eat the slug and after some debate he decided it would be funny, so he did.
A few days later Sam became weak and complained of severe pain in his legs.
After visiting the emergency room doctors told him that he had contracted a parasite known as ‘rat lungworm’ from the slug.
Soon after the diagnosis, Sam fell into a coma, where he remained for 420 days.
He woke up paralyzed, unable to eat without a tube or move without intense effort. He required 24-hour care, seven days a week.
He died 8 years later in 2018.
