Just after 11am the United States dropped a second atomic bomb nicknamed `Fat Man’ above the Japanese city of Nagasaki 78 years ago today on 9th August, 1945 💣🇯🇵📍
On 6 and 9 August 1945, the United States detonated two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively. The aerial bombings together killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of whom were civilians, and remain the only use of nuclear weapons in an armed conflict.

The original target had been the city of Kokura, but the B29 carrying the bomb had been diverted to Nagasaki because of heavy cloud cover. Nonetheless, over 2 square miles of the city were pulverized and some people instantly vaporized.
