Growing up I thought ‘Day-O’ was cheesy. Not knowing that is was a song about rebellion and that Harry Belafonte managed to finesse the world of white media to make millions of white voices chant songs of Black rebellion unknowingly. Now that’s gangsta.

Harry was a man of many things, he sang in Kwéyol, he turned his back on popular music to hone in on his heritage, he bailed Martin Luther King from jail, and was one of the people behind MLK’s March to freedom, actually he was one of MLK’s closest bredrins. The man who brought Mandela to the USA for the first time.

As a child in Jamaica he saw the painful legacy of colonialism first hand and this began his pathway to activism.

When the world was swooning over his good looks, pretty smile, catchy songs and powerful screen performances, he used the opportunity to divert their eyes to his real passion - Racial and Social Justice, at a risk to his own career. That’s activism at its heart.
