Mind Boggling That Africans Are So Dense... Zimbabwean philosopher and public speaker Joshua Maponga points out the absurdity of African countries trashing their budgets to import essentials from outside powers when they could get the same result more cheaply by collaborating with their neighbours - and, in the process, bolster African unity and self-reliance.
Our continent has plenty of resources to go round. He argues it's self-serving leaders who cling to power that are the main obstacle. Who would you get rid of first?

BURKINA FASO RECLAIMS ANOTHER AREA FROM TERRORIST CONTROL AFTER MORE THAN 3 YEARS... Burkina Faso has reclaimed another locality that had reportedly been under the control of armed terrorist groups since January 7, 2023. On August 9, Burkinabè forces retook the area, marking another territorial gain as military operations continue across the country. The return of state control after more than three years represents another step in Burkina Faso’s campaign to recover communities lost to armed groups and restore security for displaced populations.

Why did some missionary schools in Nigeria want girls to shave their heads?

During the colonial era, Christian mission schools didn’t just teach reading and writing.

They also introduced European ideas about discipline, appearance, modesty, and “proper” behaviour.

For some Nigerian girls, this extended to strict rules around their hair and appearance.

Hair that once carried cultural meaning and was styled according to local traditions could now be treated as something that needed to be controlled, simplified, or removed.

But the story is more complicated than simply “missionaries hated African hair.”

Mission schools were part of a much larger effort to reshape education, family life, religion, and social behaviour according to European Christian values.

And some of those school rules survived long after colonial rule ended.

How much of what we consider “normal” school discipline today actually comes from the colonial era?
