His advisors being enlightenment thinkers effectively steered Frederick from the religious piety of his parents to more liberal, one belief being re-opening of public entertainment. Later in 1766 after having been drunk all his life the king died of alcoholism. His last words were said to have been "It is a great consolation to me in my last hour that I have never wilfully offended anyone, and that there is not a drop of blood on my hands."
