Let’s talk Reparations.
Many of us have come to understand that Abolition was only possible through the compensation of the 46,000+ owners of enslaved people. Many of which were Parliamentarians who had a vested interest in plantation politics. This resulted in a pay out of billions in today’s money to owners of enslaved people. This money was then reinvested into the British economy which then birthed the Industrial Revolution of Britain.
Reparative Justice is not a new conversation that the former colonies have been demanding. Generations have been trying to engage the UK and Europe in the conversation, only to receive little to no acknowledgement.
Sir Hilary Beckles has been one of the forerunners in the quest for reparative justice, again bringing an important insight as he addresses Harvard University.
